History:
1.December 12-13, 1988 – The first Bethesda Workshop was held at the National Institute of Health, Bethesda, Maryland; convened by the Division of Cancer Prevention and Control, National Cancer Institute (NCI). Recommendations were published in JAMA, 19891 and Human Pathology, 19902.
2.April 29-30, 1991 – The next Bethesda Workshop was also sponsored by NCI. The report was published in Acta Cytologica3, Human Pathology4, and American Journal of Clinical Pathology5 in 1992.
3.April 30-May 2, 2001 – The 3rd Bethesda Workshop was convened by NCI and cosponsored by 44 other professional societies with over 20 countries represented. The Consensus Statement was published in JAMA in 20026.
4.2014 Update – Review and update of the 2001 System was done by a task force appointed on behalf of American Society of Cytopathology. The update was jointly published in Journal of the American Society of Cytopathology7, Cancer Cytopathology8, Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease9 and Acta Cytologica10 by the American Society of Cytopathology, the American Cancer Society, the American Society for Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology, and the International Academy of Cytology respectively.
